2023 Law Enforcement Hero
We honored Sergeant Maria Perez of the Leonia Police Department. Sgt. Perez is a bilingual community-oriented law enforcement professional with over 20 years of experience. She is deeply committed to protecting lives, citizens and property, and is known for building mutual trust and cross-cultural ties with diverse populations.
She has had a positive impact on many victims of domestic violence, being present when victims felt weak and hopeless and giving them strength and the opportunity to believe in themselves again.
Maria Perez is the first Hispanic sergeant with the Leonia Police Department. She is the recipient of two Lifesaver Awards in 2006 and 2018, and of a Leonia Police Department Commendation Letter.
Sgt. Perez continues to work hard in the efforts to connect with the citizens of Leonia and to have the Hispanic community feel represented within their local police department.
